“God is not coming to save you…”: 9 years after winning the Champions Trophy, MS Dhoni’s epic quote to fans cricket news

On 23 June 2013, the Indian cricket team led by MS Dhoni completed a memorable battle against England in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy to win the prestigious tournament for the second time in their history. It was India’s first outright win as it was to share the trophy with Sri Lanka in 2022. The win was also memorable as it completed the set of all three major ICC trophies with MS Dhoni as captain. He is the only international captain to have won the ICC T20 World Cup (2007), the ICC World Cup (2011) and the ICC Champions Trophy (2013).

It was also the last time India won an ICC tournament. Hence, Indian cricket fans re-celebrated the moment on social media on Thursday. #MSDhoni was trending on Twitter and fans remembered a great quote from the former India captain, which he said to Nasir Hussain during the presentation ceremony after the final.

“It’s important to be positive. I said ‘Let’s get off to a good start. Something that’s very important. Don’t think about the outcome and the first and most important thing was: don’t look up, God isn’t coming to save you’ You have to fight it. You are the No. 1 team and let’s play like that. If we lose, they have to score runs, we won’t make it easy for them,” Dhoni had said.
