Golf carts ran in Texas; 4 are dead

GALVESTON, Texas ( Associated Press) – Four people were killed — including two minors — in a golf cart when a suspect driving a pickup truck drove past a stop sign at a southeast Texas intersection. Texas, police reported.

Miguel Espinoza, 45, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in a crash that occurred at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Galveston, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Houston, police said.

Police said Espinoza was held at the Galveston County Jail on Sunday on a $400,000 bond. His lawyer did not arrive.

Galveston Police Sergeant Derek Gaspard said after the van failed to stop, it collided with a pickup truck, which in turn crashed into a golf cart with six people inside. He said golf carts and trucks were going in opposite directions from the intersection.

Police said the golf cart driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while a woman and two minors were taken to hospital, where they died. The other two passengers – an adult and a minor – were admitted to hospital in a serious condition on Sunday, police said.

According to police, Espinoza and his passenger, who live in the city of Rosenberg in the Houston area, suffered minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital and later released.

Gaspard said the occupants of the pickup truck were not injured. The names and ages of the dead were not disclosed.

Gaspard said he believed the golf cart, which was rented, was legally plying on a city street. He told that at the time of the accident, members of two different families were in that vehicle.

Galveston Mayor Craig Brown said golf carts have become “a very luxurious means of transportation” for residents and visitors to the island’s tourist area on the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Brown said the city has implemented provisions to make them operate more safely in the past, and additional measures will be discussed at an upcoming city council meeting.
