Gonzaga, UCLA, Kansas Top NWN Top 25; Michigan No. 4. till

Gonzaga, UCLA and Kansas took the top three spots in The Associated Press’s first top 25 rankings of the regular season, while Michigan climbed two places to No.

Bulldogs get 55 first places in poll from 61-person media panel Released on Monday after the victory over Texas. 2 Bruins had six first-place finishes after beating Villanova and the Jayhawks were third after a win over Michigan State.

Villanova dropped one place to No. 5. Purdue, Duke, Texas, defending national champion Baylor and Illinois round out the top 10.

After participating in the previous season’s national championship game, Gonzaga was the runaway No. 1 in the Preseason NWN Top 25. The Zags returned key players from that team, including Precision All-American Drew Timme, and filled holes in their roster with skilled newbies and transfers.

Gonzaga (2-0) rolled as expected over Dixie State in their opener and then had an opening statement game, jumping to the then-numbers. 5 Texas on its way to a solid victory Saturday night. Timme was the catalyst, finishing with a career-high 37 points.

UCLA faced its own opening trial on Friday night when it hosted the then-no. 4 Villanova. The Bruins were sluggish early without Cody Riley due to a sprained left knee, but rallied from a 10-point deficit to win 86–77 in a raucous Pauley Pavilion.

Kansas (2–0) played Michigan State in a double-header with Kentucky and Duke at Madison Square Garden to start the season. The Jayhawks were quick, winning 87–74 behind Ochai Agaji’s career-high 29 points. Agbazi, who considered leaving Lawrence for the NBA, added 25 points in a one-sided victory over Tarleton State.

“(I came back) for this. Be on this stage, be in this moment,” Aghazi said.
