Goodbye Uruguay, too many goodies for one trivial strategy

DOHA ( Associated Press) – And if Uruguay had been more encouraging?

The question inevitably arises a day after the Celeste’s elimination in the first round of the World Cup, an early goodbye to a team that was a candidate in its field to reach the round of 16 by history and nicknames.

Despite boasting a menu of attacking midfielders and lethal gunners, the Uruguayan team paid for their lack of boldness in their first two games, drawing 0–0 with South Korea and losing 2–0 to Portugal.

It was only when the water reached his neck that coach Diego Alonso called off the speculation and bet on Giorgio de Arrascata, whom he had dropped at the start of the tournament.

The attacking midfielder of Brazil’s Flamengo scored in a 2–0 win against Ghana, which was to no avail as South Korea, due to a 2–1 win over Portugal and a better goal difference, were among the best 16 in the competition

Uruguay could not match the mark of Russia 2018, when they lost in the quarter-finals against France, the eventual champions.

end of cycle

Third-place finishers in South Africa 2010 and Copa America 2011 champions, Qatar bid farewell to scorers Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani, defenders Diego Godin and Martin Cáceres, and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

“It hurts a lot to say goodbye to the World Cup, but we have the peace of mind that we left everything for our country,” Suarez said. In his fourth and last World Cup, “Pistolero” did not score a goal.

Cavani, who along with Suarez are the two all-time top scorers for the Uruguayan team, suffered the same drought.

What will happen with Alonso?

The coach’s contract expired with the elimination on Friday. He had replaced the historic “Maestro” Óscar Tábarez to play the last four games of the South American qualifiers, was questioned for his tactical pettiness and Uruguay finished seventh.

Alonso revived La Celeste, but the caution of his tactical approach at the World Cup and the public criticism of some players made his continuation impossible.

“This is not the time to talk about it,” Alonso replied briefly when asked about his future.

Only the coach and the veterans of the team are not responsible for this defeat. Even the smallest didn’t measure up.

Federico Valverde was unable to continue the high level he showed at Real Madrid – eight goals and four assists – before the league was interrupted for the World Cup.

Same goes for Darwin Nuñez, who scored eight goals between the Premier League and the Champions League in his first season at Liverpool.

With Manchester United’s twenty-something Facundo Pellistri, it will depend from now on whether ambition prevails over the “claws” in Uruguay.
