Google Maps: See the International Space Station! Yes, You Can Do It Through Google Street View

Using Google Maps’ Street View feature, you can now see what’s inside the International Space Station. Here is everything you need to know.

Google Maps is being used by almost everyone to check directions. If you are new to a place, lost, or searching for a specific place, Google Maps can be very helpful. But what if we told you that you can even see distant things in the sky? Yes, you can see the International Space Station from inside too and making it possible is the Google Street View feature in Google Maps? If you haven’t tried Google Street View yet, use it to view the International Space Station now.

What is Google Street View? For the uninitiated, Street View by Google Maps is a virtual representation of our surroundings, consisting of millions of panoramic images. Street View’s content comes from two sources — Google and contributors, Google said. Using the Street View feature, people from anywhere can see virtually any part of the Earth from outside. As already stated, you can use this feature to virtually visit the International Space Station (ISS) as well. In a blog post on July 20, 2017, Thomas Pesquet, astronaut at the European Space Agency (ESA), who spent six months on the International Space Station (ISS) as a flight engineer, tells us what it’s like to live . The ISS and its Experience Capturing Street View Imagery in Zero Gravity.

“For the six months I spent on the International Space Station, it was difficult to find words or take a picture that accurately describes the feeling of being in space. Working with Google on my latest mission, I set out to show Street View Imagery captured what the ISS looks like from the inside, and what it would look like to be viewed from below on Earth from outer space,” the blog post read. It may be known that the ISS serves as a base for space exploration—potential future missions to the Moon, Mars and asteroids—and gives us a unique perspective on Earth.

“Due to the particular constraints of living and working in space, it was not possible to collect Street View using Google’s usual methods. Instead, the Street View team worked with NASA at the Johnson Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center in Houston, Texas. I worked in Huntsville, Alabama to design a gravity-free method of collecting imagery using DSLR cameras and equipment already aboard the ISS. I then collected still photos in space, which were sent to Earth, where They were stitched together to create panoramic 360-degree imagery of the ISS,” the astronaut said in a blog post.
