Because the Tourmalet, at 2,115 metres, is one of the highest road passes in the Pyrenees, where the legend of the Tour de France cycling race is written almost every summer in the shadow of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. But let’s know about some more special things…
The Grand Tourmalet, together with the Compagnie des Pyrénées, is undertaking an investment program of 32 million euros over the next ten years, with the ambition of adopting four seasons of tourism. And it starts with the redesign of the activity area that will become a natural space next to the heart of the resort and at the Pic du Midi cable car exit, also accessible to pedestrians and skiers from the restaurant and parking areas.
The project will allow the destruction of 2 ski lifts and the demolition of a certain number of old buildings, keeping only the shepherds’ huts; Re-planting with seeds selected in collaboration with the Bagnères-de-Bigorre Botanical Conservatory to promote the reuse of excavated material and the recovery of local species.
The carpet for beginners has been moved to this location, another existing one has been modernized and a new snow garden, which will improve learning skiing for beginners.
Two new family areas at Grand Tourmalet
This winter, Grand Tourmalet will inaugurate two new family areas on the snow front of the slopes of La Mongie and Barèges. Everything is planned for an unforgettable family holiday. Children and parents can participate in a number of activities such as snowtubing, sledding, a children’s playground (Molki, Chamboulout, etc.), make-up workshops, etc. In addition, the Lacette Green Trail located in Barrage Forest has been specially redesigned with a children’s module with bells and rotating elements that little ones can tap on while they ski and have fun.
Lienz and Payol: Nordic Jewels of the Grand Tourmalet
The Grand Tourmalet has two privileged places for lovers of Nordic activities. Two areas where to pray the mountain. One of them is the Lienz Plateau in the heart of the forest, which offers spectacular views of the Pays Toy valley and the Eyre Forest. There is free admission for 1 to 5 hour snowshoe tours, sledding and dog sledding. The other is Domaine de Payol also known as Le Petit Canada. This spectacular environment surrounding Payol Lake has a spectacular beech forest and is easily accessible. It is perfect for enjoying snowshoeing, dog sledding or mountain biking. La Voi Lactie, The Hotel of the Stars
The Grand Tourmalet Resort on the La Mongie slope opens its first four-star hotel in December. The old Crete Blanche Hotel, very close to the ice front, changes its name and position. After a complete refurbishment, La Voie Lactée has added a fourth star to its plaque. The new owners have opted for a modern and intimate style, salvaging some sixties touches to the golden age of the complex.
The historic La Mongi establishment has 20 rooms, a gym and yoga room, a spa, two outdoor Nordic baths for four people, a 40-square-metre seminar room and a tea room with a cake menu.
