Whistled, then hit something. While trying to escape, Rajisa’s car was shot down.

When the Banico couple went on leave from home in February, they didn’t know how dramatically their lives would change: Slava (37) and his wife Angela (32) had gone to visit friends in Poland before the war broke out. Son Daniel, 14, an intellectually challenged child, lived at home with grandmother Rajisa in Sumy, a town not far from the Russian border. Sumi was suddenly surrounded by Putin’s army.

The couple fled Poland to Olten to live with Oksana Matthews (44), the sister of Slava Bannikov, who is married to a Swiss man and has lived here for years. SonntagsBlick had come to meet him in March. “We’re sick of worrying about Danielle and Rajissa,” the parent said at the time. In the meantime a miracle happened. Son Daniel and Rajisa were able to save themselves. After the Russians entered, they did not let anyone out at first. Then a corridor opened and the grandmother went away with the boy. Rajisa’s car kept falling behind till the convoy was over.
