Gregory and Abushi’s suspension revoked, will pay fine

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – Denver Broncos linebacker Randy Gregory and Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman Ode Abushi will not serve one-game suspensions after fighting in Sunday’s game.

Both players appealed the suspension and will have to pay fines instead. On Tuesday, NFL hearing officer Derrick Brooks overturned Gregory’s conviction and fined him $50,000. while officer James Thrash overturned Abushi’s suspension and required him to pay a fine of $12,000.

“I’m not surprised,” Abushi said Wednesday about the decision. “I think the league did the right thing, that the video showed everything. I think they made the right decision.”

Gregory and Abushi swung at each other after the Rams beat the Broncos 54–14 on Christmas Day. As players from both teams gathered to shake hands after the match, Gregory and Abushi exchanged words and Gregory threw a punch that was returned by Abushi before being pulled away by his teammates.

Abushi doesn’t know why Gregory was angry at him in particular, given that he doesn’t remember that there was any brawl during the match.

“We came to the middle (of the field after the game), and I think he was feeling bad about the score,” Aboushi said. “And what happened, happened… I was surprised (by the suspension), but I knew it was going to take some work to (appeal).

Gregory, a longtime running back with the Cowboys, returned on December 18 after missing 2 1/2 months for knee surgery in his first season in Denver.

Aboushi has started four games since joining the team in September and made extended appearances in two others due to multiple injuries to the Rams’ line. He missed just one snap against the Broncos and is expected to start at right guard against the Chargers on Sunday.
