Grey, Sanchez Help Twins Raise Division Lead Over Parents

CLEVELAND ( Associated Press) — Sonny Gray scored seven unscored innings and Gary Sanchez had four RBIs to help the Minnesota Twins extend their lead in the AL Central on Monday night with an 11-1 blow to the Cleveland Guardians.

Sanchez beat homer by three runs in Tristan McKenzie’s (4-6) second innings. Nick Gordon and Carlos Correa added two-run homers for Minnesota, now three games to Cleveland. The teams will play four more times this week.

The Guardians have lost five straight.

Gray (4-1) dropped just three singles and dismissed three.

Yankees 9, Athletics 5

NEW YORK ( Associated Press) – Josh Donaldson hit a two-run double during his sixth inning of six as New York beat Oakland.

The Yankees took advantage of interference calls from two catchers, a hit batter and a walk to spark their rally. Donaldson pitched a 0-2 fastball to AJ Puck (1-1) in left field for a 6-5 lead.

New York won this season after going down for the 23rd time, improving their major-best record to 54–20.

In the third, Avis Andrus hit a three-run double for Oakland.

Albert Abreu (1-0) scored four runs in 2 1/3 hitless innings.

Cardinals 9, Marlins 0

TORONTO ( Associated Press) — Kevin Gossman matched a season high with 10 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homerided and Toronto halted Boston’s seven-game winning streak.

Guerrero hit a two-run home run, his 18th of the season, Matt Chapman also exploded two runs and George Springer added a single shot.

Gaussmann (6-6) allowed four hits and went for two.

Red Sox right-hander Conor Siebold (0-1) conceded seven runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) – Machel Franco hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as Washington beat Pittsburgh.

Luis García had three hits for the nationals, having won five of the seven.

Top prospect Oneil Cruz hit his first homer of the season for Pittsburgh.

Pirates reliever Chris Stratton (4-4) was out of work around Garcia’s leadoff double in the eighth, when Franco launched a first-pitch slider to the left-centre, giving the Nationals the first lead of the night.

Carl Edwards Jr. (2-1) made two no-scoring innings, and Kyle Finnegan took the ninth for his first save.
