Guanajuato has been transformed into a state in which more companies in the agribusiness sector have a certification that allows them to sell their products in markets such as the United States and Europe, which have tighter controls for this.
Yemil Zarzar Korniatis, manager of certification at Control Union Mexico, said during the conference that he offered within the framework of the Expo Agrolimentaria 2022 that Mexico has become one of the countries with the largest number of certified food producers, As well as being one of the countries with the largest production area which has certifications to be able to export to different parts of the world.
On this, Guanajuato has played an important role, as it has at least 70 operations with organic certification in terms of vegetables, As well as 28 companies with Global GAP certification, which allows them to ship their products to the United States and Europe.
But why are certificates important? Yamil Zarzar Korniatis explained that the importance lies in the fact that it is not able to sell only in those markets. Which in itself is already somewhat appealing, but it is also sending the message that the practices with which these foods are being produced align with 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Organization to reduce the accelerating effects of climate change.

“Behind all this is a real situation which is our planet, everyone’s concern and should be The concern of all of us who dedicate ourselves to this.
“One of the top concerns and this is where some of the trends in the agriculture sector come from, is climate change. Because with this estimate of a two degree centigrade increase in temperature, we’re working so that it’s not two degrees and it’s already one and a half degrees. This is combined with certification to make sustainable production”, he explained.
The manager of the Union Mexico Control Certification also pointed out that they are also calling for a food democracy. Where it is guaranteed that the foods that reach the world’s tables are the healthiest, but also those that are produced with best practices.
“We are overloaded with the planet That is, we are consuming more resources than the planet and this is clearly worrying us, We are talking about 40% of agricultural land has been destroyed There is also high water stress and by 2050 there will be about 10 billion people demanding food, there is also concern about how we will feed all these people, because on the other hand we also have many inequalities Because on the one hand we have 800 million malnourished people while two billion people are obese and overweight So one wonders what’s going on? There is an imbalance and it forces us to have more and better food on the table.
For this reason, organic certification has increased, and Mexico and Guanajuato have begun to lead these good practices. And it has ensured that state-produced food is guaranteed to enter the United States and Europe, but according to Yamil Zarzar “what has been done is still very little we must all turn to that path of sustainability.” is required.”
