In musical circles, Mary Lemon is best known by her stage name, as an homage to her sometimes harsh South Minneapolis roots, both literal and metaphorical. Lemon ran a barbershop for years on 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, now often referred to as George Floyd Square. At the time, she had an annual tradition of finding young families living in shelters and offering them makeup and holiday celebrations for free.

Lemon embraced SouthSide Fancy full-time when she gave up the hairdressing business for ten years to embrace the rap game. She produced the first Minnesota Jr. Music Awards, which became one of the first sites dedicated to the music video “Hot Cheetos & Takis” by young performers known as Da Rich Kidzz. The song, a city anthem praising a specific junk food mix, became a sensation that made it onto Spin Magazine’s 2012 Best Songs list.

Three years ago, Lemon brushed his hair again when he hung the tiles for the Fancy’s Beauty Bar on 1999 Burns Ave. on the east side of St. Paul. On the afternoon of December 19, she will resume her holiday makeup tradition, focusing this time on the oldest affordable Kings Crossing apartment complex on University Avenue and Dale Street in Frogtown.

Its goal is to offer 5 to 10 older women of any race or religion a “full fashion” makeover, with hair, wigs and makeup, without having to leave the nursing home. Cable studio Speak Minneapolis plans to record part of the event, as will the sister cities radio network, which will provide music.

“I usually go to orphanages, have children and give them Christmas, but this year I wanted to take care of the elders,” Lemon said, noting that the pandemic has hit the elderly extremely hard. It requires all participants to be fully vaccinated.

To fund the redevelopment, Lemon is asking sponsors to donate up to $ 200 per elder. To become a sponsor, write to fancysbeautybar@gmail.com.
