ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. ( Associated Press) – Damon Hamlin returned to Buffalo on Monday in another encouraging sign of marked improvement at the Bills’ defense just one week after going into cardiac arrest during a game in Cincinnati.
The specialists treating him said Hamlin left the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in the morning. He was taken to Buffalo, where Dr. William Knight said the player was “doing well.”
Recovery will continue at the Buffalo Clinic.
According to doctors, Hamlin has been walking since Friday and eating regularly, as well as undergoing treatment. Thus, he has shown an evolution between normal and accelerated in his recovery after the cardiac arrest that put his life at risk.
Doctors said recovery after this type of problem is usually measured in weeks or months.
Dr. Timothy Pritts said, “We are excited about his recovery.”
Hamlin’s return came a day after rooting for Bill from his hospital bed. The team closed the regular season with a 35–23 victory over the New England Patriots.
That game included a rousing show of support from Biles and Hamlin.
All Buffalo players wore a patch with Hamlin’s number 3 on their jerseys and honored their teammate by flashing three fingers on one hand in the final minutes. Tight end Dawson Knox made a heart with his hands while celebrating his touchdown.
Hamlin responded with a heartfelt dedication to Knox on his Twitter account. Apart from posting pictures with the number 3, many fans did the same.
The 24-year-old safety has made significant progress in his recovery since spending his first two days at the medical center unconscious and on a ventilator.
Woke up on Wednesday night. Eventually she was able to hold the hands of her loved ones.
By Friday, he was breathing on his own and was even able to talk to his teammates via video conference, telling them, “I love you guys.”
The latest medical reports came out Saturday, describing Hamlin’s brain function as “excellent” but in critical condition.
That same day, Hamlin tweeted: “If you give love to the world it comes back three times as much… Thank you to all who have reached out and prayed. It strengthens me on my path to recovery. Keep praying!”
The NFL benched Hamlin in his 18th week of the season. As noted before games, the number 3 was highlighted on the 30-yard lines and players wore warm-up jerseys with the message: “Love to Asphalt 3”.
Hamlin’s heart stopped Monday night when he made what appeared to be a routine tackle in the first quarter of a Bengals home game. The meeting was suspended before the NFL announced its final cancellation.
