SEATTLE ( Associated Press) — Mitch Hanniger hit a three-run homer in the first innings to provide all the offense needed to Marco Gonzales, who beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Thursday to beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1.
Seattle took the first game of a four-game series between two teams seeking to advance to the playoffs in the American League. The two teams will meet six more times in the next 10 days, which could be a glimpse of the series after the season.
Julio Rodriguez walks to open the game, and Jesse Winker singles out, before Hanniger continues to set fire to the batsman’s box. He found a pitch from starter Tristan McKenzie (9-10) and sent the ball over the fence to left-center field in the third at-bat of the game.
The flyball seemed harmless at first but turned into a home run on a hot afternoon.
Hanniger has made it to three of the last four matches and has amassed .313 runs in 17 matches since coming off the disabled list.
Cleveland’s only run from Gonzales (9-12) came in the first innings, when Steven Cowan doubled and scored on the groundout retiring Jose Ramirez.
Gonzales found a crucial grounder for the dismissal from Josh Naylor that ended that first innings.
Andrés Munoz knocked out Ramírez with runners in first and third to end the eighth inning. A later, he scheduled some strikes and earned his third save.
For the Guardians, Dominican Amade Rosario 4-2, Ramirez 3-0, Omar Gonzalez 4-1. Venezuela Andres Jiménez 4-0.
For the Mariners, Dominican Rodriguez 3–0 with a run, Carlos Santana 1–0. Eugenio Suarez of Venezuela 3-0.
