ATLANTA ( Associated Press) — Michael Harris put Atlanta ahead with a two-run triple in the fifth inning that spoiled Jared Koenig’s major league debut, and the fiery Braves thrashed the struggling Oakland Athletics 13-2 on Wednesday.
Ian Anderson (5-3) allowed just two runs on six hits in six innings as the Braves rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the second night in a row to sweep the two-game series and extend their winning streak to seven, the longest. so far this season. The A’s have lost eight games in a row and 11 of the last 13.
The 28-year-old Koenig (0-1) was leading 2-1 after four innings after completing his arrival in the major leagues the long way, including a stint between 2017 and 2019 in the independent leagues. The southpaw did not retire a single enemy in the fifth round.
After walking Marcell Ozuna, who advanced to third on Adam Duvall’s double off the left-field fence, Koenig faced Harris in a rookie matchup.
Lefty Harris hit a line drive past first baseman Seth Brown and nestled in the right-field corner, driving Ozuna and Duvall to the plate to give the Braves a 3-2 lead.
Harris headed into third base. With two out, Austin Riley hit a two-run homer off Domingo Acevedo to increase the lead to 5-2. William Contreras, Ozzie Albies and Duvall also homered as part of Atlanta’s 13-hit offense.
For the Braves, the Venezuelans Contreras 4-1 with an RBI and a run scored; Ronald Acuña Jr. 4-1 with a run scored. The Dominican Marcell Ozuna 3-1 with two runs scored. Cuban Guillermo Heredia 1-0.
For the Athletics, the Dominican Ramón Laureano 4-3 with a run scored; Cristian Pache 1-0; Luis Barrera 2-0. The Venezuelan Elvis Andrus 3-0. Panamanian Christian Bethancourt 1-0.
