‘Have got 6 captains in last 8 months, didn’t plan when I started’: Coach Rahul Dravid

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid admitted that working with six different captains was not the real plan when he took the coaching job after Ravi Shastri’s tenure ended with the 2021 T20 World Cup last year. Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s T20I captain after the WC last year and was later sacked from the ODI captaincy post as BCCI wanted a singles captain for the white-ball formats. However, after the South Africa Test series, Kohli also relinquished the Test captaincy which made Rohit Sharma India’s all-format captain.

However, due to hectic schedules and Rohit’s injuries, India have used several captains, including KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, over the past few months. While Hardik Pandya is all set to lead the Men in Blue for the first time in the upcoming T20I series against Ireland.

Ahead of the fifth T20I against South Africa, Dravid spoke about his coaching stint with the Indian team so far, where he started working with several captains in a short span of time.

“It (coaching) has been very exciting, it has been good, I must say. It’s been challenging too, we’ve got six captains in the last eight months, which wasn’t really the plan when I started, but it’s the nature of the number of games we play, it’s the nature of covid, so my Got to work with a lot of people, it was a lot of fun. A lot of others have got the opportunity to lead, we have got the opportunity to make more leaders in the group,” Dravid told the broadcasters.

The legendary India batsman highlighted India’s performance in recent times and said that the Test series against the Proteas was disappointing as India lost the series after winning the opening Test.

“We’ve constantly tried to get better, we’ve tried a lot of different guys. In the last eight months, the tour of South Africa has been a little disappointing in terms of Test cricket. Our white-ball cricket though has been good, Which reflects the character of the team.”

Dravid also admitted that the Indian Premier League has nurtured many young fast bowlers who will go on to represent India in the years to come.

“It was incredible to see the fast bowling talent we had (during the IPL), especially with some bowlers at such (fast) pace. A lot of youngsters got a chance to showcase their skills, and a lot of good ones came out of them, which is a really good sign for Indian cricket, which is exciting in times to come.
