He reaches 10 years as a two-time All-Star of the Brewers’ DFA Cannes

Cincinnati ( Associated Press) — On the same date that he reached 10 years of major league service, the Milwaukee Brewers named two-time All-Star outfielder Lorenzo Cain on Saturday for the assignment.

Cain, 36, hit .179 in 43 matches this season with one home run and nine RBIs.

“It just got to a point where it’s probably time,” Cain told a small group of beat writers from the Brewers. “I wasn’t performing the way I wanted to, but the situation is what it is. My career has been great. I really can’t be bothered with anything, but yeah, it’s time. I wish all the best to the teammates, the coaches, the coaches, everyone I’ve played or met with throughout my career. It’s definitely been a really fun ride for me.”

Cain is in the final year of a five-year, $80 million contract he signed as a free agent in January 2018. Milwaukee is responsible for the remaining $10,897,121 of this season’s $18 million salary. They are unlikely to claim exemption because of their salary. If he is released, any team can sign him for a minimum pro-rata share of $700,000.

The center fielder played a key role for the 2015 World Series champion Kansas City Royals before signing with the Brewers, the team that originally drafted him in December 2010 before trading him to the Royals. He helped Milwaukee play each of the last four seasons in the following season.

“No doubt, he did his job,” said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. “Finally, it was time for it. It was time now.”

If there was any maliciousness in the can, it did not show.

“I would say it was mutual in parting ways,” he said. “We have a really good team. I don’t think I was contributing in the way I wanted to. I feel like they definitely had to make a move. I definitely wanted to play a lot better.” – Contributing a little more to the team – but unfortunately, that was not the case this year.

“At the end of the day, it’s been fun. I think the team can really go a long way. They’re really well-trained, well-managed. Those guys play their hearts out. I definitely love them.” I am going to miss you. It has definitely been a fun ride.”
