He will chair the Credit Union of NM and Texas

Step.- FirstLight Federal Credit Union, a financial institution serving southern New Mexico and West Texas, pioneered the leadership.

The organization announced that its Board of Directors has named Margie Salazar as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective February 1, 2023. Salazar previously served as the institute’s chief financial officer.

Carl Murphy will retire as CEO at the end of January, after 38 years of service. Murphy, 62, joined the credit union in 1984 and has served as executive director since 2003.

Jaime Barcelau, Chairman of the Board of FirstLight Federal Credit Union, said, “Carl has been a remarkable leader during an incredibly transformative time in the financial industry. He is one of the most impactful CEOs I have had the pleasure to work with. ” “The Board is truly grateful to Carl for all he has done for our members and the communities of Las Cruces, Fort Bliss and El Paso. Salazar, 47, has worked at a credit union for 25 years and began her career as a teller while attending college. During his career, he has held various positions overseeing various areas of FirstLight, including branch operations, marketing, human resources, consumer, mortgage and commercial lending, asset quality, electronic services and most recently, finance and risk management.

“Margie is an accomplished leader with extensive experience in the financial industry. I have had the pleasure of working with Margie for many years and know she has the spirit and temperament to lead our credit union. understands the needs of our members, employees, and our community stakeholders,” said Carl Murphy. He added: “Margie is an innovator in the financial sector and will carefully guide FirstLight into the future.”

Margie earned a Bachelor of Business degree in Marketing and Management from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is active in the credit union industry and is an advocate for the community after serving as El Paso Credit Union Chapter Board President and President of the Armed Services YMCA. She is currently a member of the National Association of Latino Professionals and Credit Unions and serves as Chair of the Board of the YMCA of El Paso and serves on the Advisory Board of the UTEP El Paso Banking Academy.

The executive lives west of El Paso with her husband, to whom she has been married for 24 years, and they have two children. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, mountain biking, playing board games, and helping her parents with their small business.
