The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) indicated this Friday, January 6, 2023, that it supports the Internal Revenue Service’s (SRI) resolution for an inflation adjustment in the Special Consumption Tax (ICE).
This tax adjustment applies to cigarettes, alcohol, beer (industrial and craft), sugary drinks, and plastic bags.

In Ecuador, chronic diseases represent the five leading causes of death, linked to risk factors such as the consumption of tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks.
At least 19 deaths per day are attributed to the consumption of tobacco products, i.e. 10% of the total deaths in the country.

According to the authority, the tax on these products and their gradual increase has proved to be one of the most effective means to reduce the consumption of unhealthy products.
The Resolution issued by SRI contributes to the set of actions to be taken by the national government to guarantee the population’s right to health, in line with the National Plan and the Ten-Year Health Plan 2022- 2031, according to this State Portfolio. The goal is to contribute to reducing deaths from chronic non-communicable diseases.
