The Ministry of Health warned about outbreaks of diseases that were controlled and would cause a serious public health problem.

This is evident from the National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted between October and December 2022. Nuevo León is the only state that has financed a survey with specific results for the unit.

Unit chief Alma Rosa Marroquin explained that due to the COVID pandemic, many families put off vaccinating their children, despite the fact that Nuevo León has enough doses.

“One of the problems across the country is the issue of childhood vaccinations; For many years and even before the pandemic, it was one of the most successful and globally recognized public health programs in Mexico, but coverage has since declined.

“These are very low percentages in terms of vaccination coverage, we have devised different strategies. As of today we have all the National Health Card vaccines available at health centers; They are safe, effective and completely free”, explained Marroquin.

The National Health and Nutrition Survey revealed that the percentage of vaccination against tuberculosis in the state is 77.4%; Hepatitis B 59.5%; pentavalent or hexavalent 52%; pneumococcus 88.8% and rotavirus, measles, rubella and SRP 67.1%

“This represents major public health risks due to infection outbreaks, especially for these vaccines which have less than 75% protection,” the official said. “If we start identifying which child has the whole plan, the results are alarming.”

Marroquín reported that only 26.3% of children under the age of 2 are vaccinated, 30.3% of boys under the age of 3, and only 35% of children under the age of two months have received a biologic.

The health ministry said, “The state has a very low percentage in terms of vaccination coverage.”

If it doesn’t improve, he assures, the pneumococcal infection will return, which causes not only pneumonia.

“15 years ago it was the main cause of meningitis in children under 3 years of age. It was almost eliminated after the introduction of the vaccine.

He warned that if the mothers of the families do not act on the matter and update or complete the vaccination schedule, there is a possibility that they will again be stricken with polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, rubella and measles, which are among the most common. is one of the is serious as it produces significant consequences and even death.

population without medical services

The National Health and Nutrition Survey also found that 30 percent of people do not have access to public healthcare.

“It is important not only that we know there are hospitals and health centers we can go to, but also that we feel integrated into a health system.”

In the state, 59.9% of those surveyed are affiliated with IMSS and 4.2% are affiliated with ISSSTE. 0.7% includes Cedena, Pemex and Navy doctors.

3.1 are treated in private medical services and 31.1% do not have medical access.

When it comes to going for consultations, the survey detailed that 38.6% go to private doctors, 38.6% to IMS. State health services serve 13.9%; Offices adjacent to pharmacies receive 10.7% and ISSSTE will consult 2%

Marroquín stressed that it is important to monitor health conditions by always visiting the same place.

“If we go to pharmacies or to offices with different doctors, even if they have excellent training and competence, there is no evolutionary line of what the history of our illnesses has been, and medicine becomes impersonal, so our do not have records as to the health system of diseases to bet on or guide our care strategies”, he pointed out.

It is there, Marroquin said, where problems are identified and a strategy is developed to take care of your health as a commitment to the government of Nuevo León.

“While we are committed to improving the quality and safety of the public system, we must address the 30% who represent the 1.7 million people who are not sure when they need care.”
