If there was one woman US singer Joe Jonas wouldn’t want to party with his estranged wife, it would be his “other” ex, Taylor Swift.
Sophie Turner was so close to the American pop princess that the couple was even nicknamed “Saylor.”
After the pair were seen leaving New York’s upscale restaurant Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s together last Thursday – their second night out in a week – friends say Ms Swift, who was famously dumped by Jonas in 2008 during a 25-second phone conversation, barged in was to support Ms. Turner in her increasingly bitter divorce battle.
Both women have been firm friends since 2019, when they met while sitting on the sofa on the Graham Norton Show.
But The Mail on Sunday understands Ms Swift has become an increasing supporter of the British actress, who first found fame as noble Sansa Stark in Game Of Thrones, as the end of her four-year marriage to Jonas fell apart.
So far it is Mr. Jonas, 34, who has won the PR war. Friends of his said the marriage collapsed because 27-year-old Ms Turner wanted to party too much – while he preferred to stay at home with their two daughters.
On Friday, more sources came forward to say Mr Jonas was “angry” with Ms Turner for taking legal action to try to bring their daughters, aged three and one, back to the UK, court documents show.
Speaking about Ms Turner’s alliance with Ms Swift, a friend said: “Taylor and Sophie may not have been seen together much over the years, but there is a friendship.” However, when Taylor realized what Sophie was going through, she wanted to lend her a shoulder Borrow crying out.
“Taylor isn’t silly, though. She is fully aware that seeing the two together will attract a lot of attention and a lot of buzz. And the fact that their nickname ‘Saylor’ has now been coined means that they have become a thing.”
Aside from signaling to the world that she supports Ms. Turner, Ms. Swift’s intervention will be somewhat embarrassing for Mr. Jonas, as he briefly dated her in 2008, when she was 18, before reportedly saying goodbye in a brief phone conversation separated from her.
She then wrote several breakup songs that were believed to be about him, including “Forever and Always”, “Mr Perfectly Fine”, “Better Than Revenge” and “Last Kiss”. However, they have long since made amends.
Their romance was forgotten until Ms. Swift and Ms. Turner had a girls’ night out at New York restaurant Via Carota at 2 a.m. last Tuesday and later enjoyed “martinis and caviar bumps” at celebrity hangout Temple Bar.
Two weeks earlier, Mr Jonas had filed for divorce in a Miami court, which sources said was considered a “last resort” after trying to save their relationship. Documents submitted to the court stated that their relationship was “irretrievably broken.”
The two have reportedly been living separate lives for several months.
For many, their union had always been incongruous – for Northampton-born Ms Turner and Mr Jonas, a member of US chart-toppers Jonas Brothers. Apart from attending the Playbox Theater Company in Warwick after school, Ms Turner had no connections to show business. However, when her acting teacher encouraged her to take on the role of Sansa Stark at the age of 14, her life changed forever.
Now that the mother of all pop stars is at her side, Ms. Turner is preparing to slay some demons – and has her sights firmly set on Mr. Jonas.
