Here’s what you need to know about the Scouts
30,000 Scouts travel to Gomes in Wallace over the weekend for Confederate camp. But: what exactly is Scout, how did it come to be, and what is its name? Blick provides the answer.
What is pathetic?
Scout enables children and youth to gain experience in a group. This usually happens on Saturday. Scouts do activities together: sports, handicrafts, cooking, camping, first aid. However, above all, members quickly learn to take responsibility for themselves and others. Everyone is welcome to Scout, regardless of origin, culture or religion. With 50,500 members in 550 local departments, it is the largest children’s and youth organization in Switzerland. The movement has about 60 million members in 170 countries around the world.
History of the Scout
The first Scout group was established in Switzerland in 1910. The idea came from a British officer, Robert Baden-Powell. In 1907 he first ran a camp for boys. The 21 “Boy Scouts” spent ten days on the southern English island of Brownsea. There the group dealt with nature in a big way. Because they came from different social classes, they wore uniforms to address these differences. Baden-Powell processed the experiences at Brownsea in the book “Scouting for Boys.” The idea of a scout spread rapidly—even among girls (“Girl Scouts”).
path ritual
Most rituals in Scouts serve to strengthen cohesion within a group, tribe or department. For example, by wearing similar clothes, starting an exercise routine together, or professing common values. Because the Scout movement is so diverse, each Scout group performs its rituals slightly differently.
pathname
Almost every member of the Scout movement in Switzerland has its own Scout name. Names should be unique and convey the positive characteristics and abilities of their holders. If two Scouts meet, they often address each other by this nickname – sometimes even after being active Scouts.
Path Foulard
Scout’s foulard (also Scout’s tie), a triangular scarf, is part of traditional clothing with Scout’s shirt and Scout’s purse. In Switzerland, it serves as a distinguishing feature as each department has its own foulard.
Scout Baptism
Scout baptism means for newly inducted Scouts: you are accepted into the group. It usually comes as a surprise to those who are baptized and is therefore remembered even after years.
scout greetings
The Scout greeting is a tradition – and is still used internationally today to greet Scouts. Scouts approach with their left hand, stretching their three middle fingers with their right hand and placing their thumb on their little finger. (ooo)
