RV Babu, the leader of the Hindu Aikya Vedi, a Hinduist organization, was arrested on Friday (5 February 2021). Reason for arrest It was that he opposed a bakery shop selling ‘halal’ meat. On Monday (8 February 2021), RV Babu, the general secretary of the organization was released on bail on condition of appearing before the court.
The Ernakulam police of Kerala have said on this incident that a case was registered in connection with this incident on 29 January 2021. After this, notice was sent to RV Babu but despite non-production, he was arrested. He was later released on the condition that he appear before the court on Monday. RV Babu had on social media called on people to oppose halal certification.
On this incident, BJP state president K Surendran Alleged that This action has been taken to appease Islamic fundamentalists. After that he said,
“Is Kerala an Islamic state, which is under pressure from the police to speak out against‘ Halal ’? The Chief Minister and CPM of Kerala are engaged in appeasing Islamic fundamentalists and such efforts have been taking place in Kerala for the last several years. This action has been taken only to suppress those who speak the truth, it is very important to oppose it. Through such action the CPM wants to serve its interest in the upcoming elections. ”
RV Babu has been booked under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code, which is a non-bailable offense. Activists of Hindu Aikya Vedi and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are agitating statewide to protest against this arrest.
RV Babu has worked as a campaigner in the Sangh. Also they often favor the organization on social forums. Both organizations have been campaigning against halal certification across the state for some time.
