WINSTON-SALEM, NC ( Associated Press) — Former US women’s national team star goalkeeper Hope Solo was arrested in North Carolina after being found outside with her 2-year-old twins behind the wheel of a vehicle, police said. .
A police report said Solo was arrested Thursday in the parking lot of a shopping center in Winston-Salem and charged with impaired driving, resisting a public official, and child abuse. The report indicated that he has been released from prison and that his court date is June 28.
According to the arrest report, a passerby saw Solo pass behind the steering wheel for more than an hour with the vehicle’s engine running and two children sitting in the back seat. Responding officers can smell alcohol, and the report states that Solo refused a field sobriety test and had his blood drawn instead.
Rich Nichols, a Texas attorney representing Solo, released a statement Friday but did not respond to specific questions on the allegations and said his client would not respond either.
“On the counsel’s advice, Hope cannot talk about the situation, but she wants everyone to know that her children are her life, that she has been released immediately and is now at home with her family.” That story is more sympathetic than the initial allegations suggest, and she looks forward to her opportunity to defend these allegations,” Nicole said.
Solo was sacked from the national team after the 2016 Olympics in Brazil for taking a defensive stance against defending gold medalists after calling the Swedish team a “coward”, ending a laudable playing career that was also involved in controversy.
She was suspended for 30 days in early 2015 after she and her husband, Jeremy Stevens, were pulled over in a van owned by US Soccer and Stevens was charged with a DUI. He was also benched after coach Greg Ryan’s decision to start Briana Scurry against Brazil during the 2007 World Cup was publicly questioned, with many comments seen as a minor one against Scurry.
Solo was also involved in a dispute with family members in 2014 that resulted in Solo’s arrest, although charges in that case were eventually dropped.
Solo made 202 appearances with the national team with 153 wins and an international record 102 shutouts. He won one World Cup title and two Olympic gold medals with the team.
During the 2015 World Cup championship run, he allowed just three goals in seven matches with five shutouts.
She was elected to the US Soccer Hall of Fame in January. Induction Ceremony has been held on 21st May.
Solo married Stevens in 2012, a former tight end for the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The couple has twins, Vittorio Genghis and Lozenge Oriana Judith Stevens, who were born on March 4, 2020.
