Hoskins ranked 10th; Phillies beat Nationals

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) – Rhythm pinch-hitter Rhys Hoskins hit a go-forward single in the 10th inning as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Saturday to register their 15th win in 17 matches.

The Phillies have five games over .500, their best record of the season. They are 14-2 since firing manager Joe Girardi on June 3.

Bottom Washington fell on the day he retired number 11 of Ryan Zimmerman, a former player considered a pillar of the team, before 42,730 fans filled the stands.

Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola scored eight scores for the second time in three starts. He allowed four hits and struck out eight.

His opponent, Josiah Gray, bowled a hit ball for six scoreless innings.

In the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Len Thomas hit a single with two outs from a slider by Brad Hand (2-1) on a 2–2 count. It went with a tying run at Dominican Juan Soto.

Hoskins hit in the center of the diamond from Reed Garrett (0-1), driving in automatic runner Matt Weirling from second.

Dominican Seranthani Dominguez received his first save of the year, working the tenth chapter in white.

For the Phillies, Venezuelan Odibel Herrera 4-0. Dominican Yairo Munoz runs 3-1 with an RBI.

For the nationals, Cesar Hernández of Venezuela 4–0, Keibert Ruiz 4–1, Ehire Adriánza 1–0. Dominican Soto scored 2-1 with a run, Nelson Cruz 4-0, Machel Franco 4-0, Victor Robles 2-0. Cuba Yadil Hernandez 3-0.
