Hospital staff to undergo mental health first aid training

SAH spokesperson says staff, doctors, volunteers will train to support wider community

Just as knowing how to give physical first aid to a person is an important skill, so is the ability to provide mental health first aid.

Salt Area Hospital has recognized the need for that knowledge to its staff.

“Mental Health & Addictions now has a certified mental health first aid trainer and provided inaugural training to MH&A patient and family counselors,” said SAH President and CEO Ella, in her monthly report to the hospital board earlier this week. Watson said.

“Mental health first aid is the assistance provided to a person who develops a mental health problem, who is experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or a mental health crisis. As such, physical first aid is provided until medical treatment is received. The MHFA is provided until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved,” the Mental Health Commission of Canada states on its website.

Current staff members of SAH will have the opportunity to take courses as part of Mental Health First Air.

“Mental Health First Aid Trainer is not a new staff position. A current outpatient mental health nursing team member has spent several months training to become a mental health first aid instructor. Our staff, physicians, and volunteers will continue to grow in the coming year. Mental health first aid courses will be provided,” Brandi Sharp Young, SAH spokesperson, said in an email.

“The course will provide training to our workers so that they will be able to provide support to anyone who is experiencing a decline in their mental health or a mental health crisis. The courses are being offered to support the wider community,” said Sharp Young.

“The Mental Health First Aid Program is the equivalent of being trained in standard first aid. It is a course that everyone is encouraged to take, similar to CPR or standard first aid training. Our staff, physicians and volunteers are taught mental health primary care. The ability to offer medical courses gives SAH the ability to support the Mental Health Commission of Canada – Mental Health First Aid Canada with their vision of ‘every Canadian effective mental health first aid is within reach,'” Sharpe Young said.

Canada’s Mental Health Commission says large companies such as WestJet, Husky Energy, Hydro One and Loblaw have recognized the need for good mental health among their employees.

The commission’s training includes reducing stigma around mental health problems, the realization that one in five people will experience a mental health problem this year, raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems, and Knowing what to say when connecting with someone experiencing mental health difficulties. ,
