When Barbie is in theaters this summer, it feels more like a cultural moment than a movie. The marketing campaign alone made the film ingrained in every aspect of our lives. Celebs can’t stop wearing Barbiecore outfits, embracing the “Barbie Girl” in all of us, and the catchy soundtrack can be heard everywhere. One of the most surprising songs to hit the soundtrack was the ballad “Ako Lang Ken.” In the movie, Ryan Gosling sings the tune, lamenting about the trials and tribulations of being Ken. This is one of the funniest moments from Barbie. ANow music producer Mark Ronson is revealing how the movie star feels about the attention.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ronson talked about what it took to make the Barbie soundtrack a huge hit. Not just the participation of superstars from acts like Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, and Dua Lipa, but how the music fits into the film. “I’m Just Ken” is one of those songs that fits the context of the movie perfectly, and makes a funny movie even funnier. Not to mention, the song is pretty awesome. Gosling’s musical talents have gained a new level of fame and, according to Ronson, the Driving The actor seems to be in awe of everything. He revealed:
He seems like someone who doesn’t get carried away by the hype from the little I know about him. Even if he says, ‘This is so true, I don’t even know what to tell you.’ I think he’s a real musician, he loves music, and I think he was really moved by that and like when Slash played it, you know? So there are some things that he’s actually, I think, excited about.
For those who have followed Gosling’s extensive career, it should come as no surprise that he would display this level of talent and musical skill. She started out by singing and dancing with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in the Mickey Mouse Club as a child, and showed how talented she was by starring in La La Land. The latter made him sing, dance, and play the piano throughout. Barbie seems like just a campy example of how much a multi-hyphenate is Nice Guys really an actor.
Gosling is very good at Barbie, and it’s absolutely ridiculous that he delivers one of the best, and maybe even Oscar-worthy performances of the year. He also loves the character, and talked throughout the press tour about his Kenergy, and how important it is to tell Ken’s story. All of this emotion builds up in the jaw-dropping climactic “I’m Just Ken.” Gosling has a reputation for being a pretty reserved actor, so it looks like he’s really into it. Barbie a real treat.
This “reserved” nature is probably why Ronson thinks Gosling will get all the attention Barbie that would be surreal. It was well deserved, as the song perfectly captures the feelings of his character throughout the movie. He seems to have embraced it too, as he used the song to create a flash mob for Greta Gerwig’s birthday, and is always game to talk about the beloved character. This is Ryan Gosling’s moment, and he should really enjoy it.
