Naseeruddin Shah, one of India’s finest actors, has often spoken about his views. He did the same in his recent interview. While promoting his directorial venture ‘Man Woman Man Woman’, he said, ‘It is troubling that films like Kashmir Files and Gadar 2 have become so popular.’
Speaking to ‘Free Press Journal’ when asked why it took 17 years to come back as a director, Naseeruddin Shah said, ‘I have recovered from the shock of making a bad film. It didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. I was not in the right position at that time in terms of writing a story or a film. I just thought that if I gather all the best actors, they will perform well. I thought it was a great script. But later I realized that there were mistakes in the script, especially in Irrfan Khan’s story. Leaving aside the contributions of the actors, this was a huge disappointment for me. I take responsibility for all of this. I never thought I would do another film because it was such a tough job.

Naseeruddin Shah is straightforward
When asked if the motivation to do Bollywood films has changed, the actor replied, ‘Yes! Now the more chauvinist you are, the more popular you are, because that’s what rules this country. It is not enough to love a country but also to beat the drum about it and make imaginary enemies. These people do not realize that what they are doing is very harmful.
Nisha Rawal thought of committing suicide, the world started thinking she was crazy, even her friends abandoned her.
‘How about films like Gadar 2 and Kashmir Files?’
He further said, ‘If you look at films like Kerala Story and Gadar 2, I haven’t seen them but I know what they are, disturbing that films like Kashmir Files have become hits, while the films made by Sudhir Mishra , Anubhav Sinha and Hansal Mehta, who try to show the truth of their times, are not seen by the people. But it is important that these filmmakers do not lose courage and keep talking.

‘Losing future generations’
The actor added, ‘They are responsible for the future generation. After a hundred years, people will watch Bhid and Gadar 2 and see which one reflects the reality of our times because film is the only medium that can do that. It’s terrible where filmmakers get involved in making films that show all the wrong things and also degrade other communities for nothing. This is a dangerous thing.
