How many soccer tournaments in Costa Rica are decided by the grand final?

Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (LDA) and Saprissa Deportivo are only hours away from meeting in the first leg of the Grand Final of the 2023 Tournament, a double overtime game that has become frequent.

According to statistical data and sports journalist Gerardo Coto, the second phase of the final scheme is resumed at the end of the year 2018 Equestrian Games and since then only three tournaments have not reached that time. That is, they are told 72% of first division soccer tournaments are extended two more games to determine the champion.

“This kind of second round started in the 1991 tournament and lasted through the 97-98 season; with variations in the form of each tournament, but is always contemplated according to the final season. It was applied again in 2018 until now”, Coto assured EF.

Of the 11 tournaments held since the 2018 Closing; only three championships were decided without the need for extra time.
