After 10 years, the Federal Government inaugurates this Friday, September 15, the first phase of the Mexico-Toluca train, the railway project inherited from the Enrique Peña Nieto government and only in the first phase will the full service from the observatory Toluca will offer quarterly of the following year.
The first leg of the “Insurgente” train will go from Zinacantepec Station to Lerma, in the state of Mexico and, according to the Minister of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, Jorge Nuño, the cost of a ticket for this first leg will be 15 pesos.
“The ticket costs 15 pesos but is announced by the National Infrastructure Fund (Fonadin), which is in charge of its operations,” Nuño said before the inauguration of the section of the interurban train.
The price for the entire route will be announced by Fonadin itself once the train starts operating.
The official said the railway work would be put into operation in the first quarter of 2024, adding that the total cost of the work was estimated at 96 billion pesos.
The first phase of the railway project is expected to benefit 1.3 million residents in the region and for the following year it is estimated that 81,000 passengers will be transported between Zinacantepec and Lerma stations, although the starting point of the railway will be Observatorio.
Interurban train Mexico-Toluca: Which stations offer connections?
According to the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT), the train will be partially operational on September 15 and then fully operational by April 2024. However, the agency clarified that only a section with four stations will initially be opened:
- Zinacantepec
- Pino Suárez (Center of Toluca)
- Technological
- Lerma
This service will initially run with four trains over a distance of 20 kilometers in 14 minutes. It was also announced that a train will leave the terminals every 10 minutes and will run from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
