How should the health industry support mental health in 2023?

We end 2022 with the “World Mental Health Report” commissioned by the World Health Organization, the content of which reflects the purpose for the coming year to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of mental health (and as such a What better way to close with an important topic).

This issue is important because, for each individual, it represents an intrinsic part of collective health and well-being.

In that report, the WHO laid out a comprehensive mental health action plan from 2013 to 2030:

As we can see, the reason is to change our attitudes, actions and attitudes to promote and protect mental health and provide necessary care to those who need it.

The health industry is 100% involved as part of this great effort and in this report we can learn about four key roles it plays in supporting mental health for all:

1. Provide care. To offer a variety of rights-based and equitable services regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation. This is done by the most appropriate professionals to provide effective care (within the limits of available financial human resources).

2. To promote and stop. Through programs in collaboration with other sectors that can increase awareness and understanding of mental health, eliminate stigma and discrimination, and reduce the need for treatment and recovery services.

3. Work in partnership. The health sector can partner with all stakeholders such as government, civil society, the private sector, but especially those with lived experience, to ensure that support is inclusive and focused on people with mental health conditions.

4. Support Initiative. Advocating and helping to address the current structural risks and protective factors affecting mental health conditions is very important to promote and contribute to a mental health approach in society.

Achieving this transformation requires a focused effort, but above all innovation. Focusing on people with mental health experiences is critical to improving all systems, services and outcomes. Our duty as an industry includes being involved in mental health empowerment, advocacy, policy, planning, legislation, program design, service delivery, monitoring, research and evaluation.

Our responsibility is enormous, so let’s end it by focusing on getting involved and leveraging our reach.
