This is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is also issued so that people coming to the United States have a taxpayer identification number in the country.
The ITIN is important because it helps process and account for tax returns and payments for people who are not eligible for a Social Security number. On the other hand, it also provides that the people follow the tax laws of the United States.
According to the Internal Revenue Code, this number is issued regardless of immigration status. In other words, both resident and non-resident foreigners may be required to file or report by country.
To obtain an ITIN, you must submit IRS Form W-7, Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). This will be done with the federal tax return.
Here the original documents or attested copies of the issuing agency to prove the identity and status of the foreigner shall be included.
If you qualify for an exception, this form must be submitted along with proof of identity and documents of foreign status. Supporting documentation for exceptions must also be submitted.
What are the ways to send the forms and documents?

In case of those who do not wish to mail their proof of identity and documents of foreign status, they can request it in person. To do this, they must use the services of a Certification Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS.
You can also make an appointment at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. As such, they will usually receive a letter from the IRS within seven weeks specifying their tax identification number.
