How to relieve back pain?

According to the Las Condes Clinic, most people will experience back pain at some point in their lives.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, these symptoms can occur suddenly or slowly, but can also cause mild and persistent pain or sudden and stabbing pain.

The entity points out that back pain can last for a few days and even weeks. Therefore, it is important to know how to alleviate them.

UC Davis Health, an American academic health center, notes that back pain can be relieved by:

  • Strengthening the core muscles: It is important to perform exercises to strengthen this area so that the back can withstand the pressure of the upper body.
  • Stretch daily: You can improve spinal health with this exercise.
  • Sitting with good posture: If this is bad, the intervertebral discs in the lower part of the spine are put under even greater strain than when standing.
  • Take walks: Walking is a good exercise to maintain a healthy weight and reduce strain on your back.
  • Lift weight correctly: If something is very heavy, it is better to get help so that the person cannot lift it alone.
  • Reduce the pressure on your back when sleeping: If you lie on your back, it is best to place a pillow under your knees or between them if you sleep on your side.
  • Pay attention to your weight: if you have more kilos, curvature may occur over time.
  • Quit smoking: This action restricts “blood flow to the intervertebral discs that protect the vertebrae” and reduces calcium absorption, increasing the risk of fractures.

On the other hand, the United Kingdom National Health Service also recommends the following measures to relieve pain:

  • Stay active and do daily activities.
  • Use an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to relieve pain and swelling.
  • Use a heat pack wrapped in a cloth to relieve joint stiffness or muscle spasms.
  • Avoid lying down for long periods of time.

However, if the pain persists, it is advisable to see a doctor for a professional opinion.

Harvard Medical School explains that age is usually one of the reasons for this situation, as over time the bones and joints in the lower back begin to change.

However, they point out that in most cases, back pain arises from “a strain or sprain due to simple overuse, unusual activity, excessive lifting, or an accident.”
