How to save on UK energy bills

With UK energy bills expected to remain high, it is important that households look for ways to save on their energy costs. The energy price cap is set at £1,923 a year for a typical home, but this amount can vary depending on factors such as energy consumption, payment method and location. According to the Resolution Foundation, 35 percent of households in England are expected to spend more on energy bills compared to last year.

Mark Sait, CEO and founder of SaveMoneyCutCarbon, offers some practical tips to reduce energy consumption and save on bills. The first tip is to switch off appliances that are not in use from the mains. This can significantly reduce energy consumption and potentially save up to 90 percent of household energy consumption. Another tip is to replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient ones, which not only save energy but also have a longer life.

Lowering the thermostat just one degree can result in savings of up to 10 percent on heating bills. According to the World Health Organization, a temperature of 18° is suitable for healthy adults. By reducing the thermostat from 20-21 degrees to 18 °, households can save energy and money without compromising their comfort.

Appliances on standby, also known as “vampire appliances,” consume energy and contribute to higher bills. Just switching these devices off can save up to £95 a year. In addition, washing clothes at a lower temperature, such as 30° or even 20°, can lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption and costs.

Small changes can make a big difference when it comes to saving energy. Using a water displacer bag in the toilet tank can save a liter of water with each flush. Making smarter decisions about energy use, such as checking and adjusting timers on heating systems and turning off appliances when not in use, can also help reduce energy costs.

In conclusion, saving energy bills in the UK requires adopting energy efficient habits and making small sustainable changes. By implementing these tips, households can reduce their energy consumption and ultimately save money.
