R Madhavan’s directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, in which he also plays the lead role, is just days away from release. And amidst the promotions of the film, the actor has found himself at the center of a social media storm for his comments on the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Mars mission.
A clip of him using Panchangam (Hindu calendar) to successfully launch PSLV C-25 rocket to Mars has become the subject of mockery and trolling. Now, the actor has issued a clarification admitting that it was unbeknownst to him to refer to Panchang as Panchang.
In a tweet, he wrote, “I deserve it to call Panchang “Panchanga” in Tamil. Very unknown to me. However this cannot take away the fact that what was achieved by us in Mars mission with just 2 engines A record in itself. The @NambiNOfficial development engine is a rockstar,” tagging Nambi Narayanan, former ISRO scientist and aerospace engineer on whom the film is based.

Mr Madhavan’s remarks about India’s Mars mission and almanac were originally made in Tamil at an event, but were translated into a Twitter thread by singer TM Krishna. The tweet read, “In case you don’t understand Tamil Indian rockets didn’t have 3 engines (solid, liquid and cryogenic) that help western rockets get themselves into Mars orbit. Since India lacks Therefore, he used the information in the ‘Panchangam’ (Hindu calendar).
Sharing the video, TM Krishna had added, “Disappointed that ISRO has not published this important information on its website. Time to consider Mangal Panchang too!
During the speech, Mr. Madhavan further said, “The rocket was launched and it went into Mars’ orbit around Earth, the Moon and Jupiter’s moons and Ricochet.”

India became the first country to reach Mars orbit in the first attempt in 2014.
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is a biographical drama that traces the life and achievements of Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely accused of espionage. The film will release on July 1.
