In February 2022 I Landed on Twitter as a Web Strategy Manager For the Developer Platform team. But I got fired and months later I’m still looking for a new job.
I found out I was pregnant in mid-November 2021 during the interview process for The Social Network, but I was able to negotiate maternity leave when I was hired. I gave birth to my daughter prematurely, in June, about 4 months after it started.
When I started work in October, everyone on twitter was so nervous but I was trying to be optimistic. I began to realize that my classmates knew something that I didn’t. Later I learned that there were going to be layoffs within the company. The rumors turned true.
same month I was fired but I was not informed, but I found out because from one day to the next I lost access to my corporate email. I woke up the next morning to an email finally telling me I was being laid off, but its contents were very generic, cold and impersonal.
probably since I have applied for more than 60 different positions. Interview procedures vary greatly: some are short and to the point, others are long and drawn out.
I still work at Twitter and I’m watching from the front row how everything falls apart: right now all I think about is getting my salary
Here’s what I learned in the process:
The job market is red hot, so another candidate might have already beat you out
The labor market is red hot: Multiple people applying for the same job so just when you think you’ve found a job that’s a good fit for you, another candidate has outbid you for it.
It has happened to me on more than one occasion that I have been enthusiastic about a specific job during the interview, only to find out later that I was dropped and the process was already in the final stages with other candidates.
I also have interviews scheduled that have been canceled because The job was offered to someone else. Simply, the moment I sent the syllabus it was not enough.
The interview may require time-consuming exams and side projects
For positions in my industry and similar to positions I’ve held before, candidates are often asked prepare a presentation or perform various tasks to demonstrate that they are capable to take them out. This can be a challenge, especially if you’re a new mom and don’t have much time to spare.
The problem with these test interviews is that not everyone has time to do something in 24 or 48 hours. Also, you are expected to work flawlessly and strategically to impress employers.
When looking for work it is important to broaden the scope of companies and types of positions.
When I started looking for a job, I started building my resume with Different companies and different positions to test the terrain And see what kind of jobs they offered me considering my experience. It was the first experiment to see where I could gain ground and expand my opportunities.
People dismiss themselves. CV is rejected before sending or even before they know it because it doesn’t meet all the requirements, but the reality is that in most cases People are hired who do not meet all the requirements specified in the job advertisement. It’s better to request anyway as nothing is lost by trying it.
The worst that can happen is that you don’t get the job and for that matter, it’s a pre-existing condition.
You need to show the interviewers that you have unique experience and how it can be beneficial to the company.
Something that sets my experience apart from the rest is that I started out working in the marketing field and then moved into product management. it gave me Benefits from being able to work with both creative teams and technical teams like developers and engineers.
This was one of the attributes I highlighted when I applied for this position at Twitter.
According to experts, adoption of change and deep digital knowledge will be the top 2 recruitment trends of 2023
Those who are currently looking for work and have many interviews, one of the things they should know They have to be clear about what makes them unique. They should know what their superpower is.
In each interview, the company and the people responsible for the hiring should be well-known.
Knowing who’s in front of the interview table means knowing your audience. It is always necessary if you want to apply for a specific job. Know well the company you want to enter, like job characteristics And the responsible person Recruited.
Once, I got an interview to be a part of the design team of one of the companies where I posted my resume. i didn’t get the job but if i had prepared and really thought about what the designer who interviewed me would be looking for Knowing that I was a marketing specialist, I wish I would have done things differently and probably would have been offered this position.
since then i always try to think How does my profile interest them and what kind of questions can they ask me? Depending on the position I’m applying for and how they view my work.
Even if you don’t get hired, interviewing is always an exercise in getting better and better.
I try to approach every interview I do an exercise for the next, In each one that hasn’t gone my way, I’ve tried to retain the information they’ve given me to change my approach the next time.
Whatever mistakes I make in one interview, I correct them in the next interview., If it doesn’t go well in the end, I try to think that they lose it and I don’t. When the right opportunity comes with the right company, they will know how to recognize my talent.
