‘I put my hands around her neck’: Chilling police interview played to jury in ‘demon’ murder trial

A court has heard a first-hand account from the man accused of killing his girlfriend because he thought she was a demon.

Jordan Brodie Miller, 21, is standing trial in Newcastle’s Supreme Court for the murder of 18-year-old Emerald Wardle at their home in the suburb of Metford, near Maitland, in June 2020.

“I just did what I thought I had to do”, Mr Miller told detectives during an interview, recorded soon after his arrest in the early hours of June 20, 2020.

The jury was also yesterday played footage from police body-worn cameras, in which Mr Miller told the officers at the scene, “She sucked the life out of me, I killed a demon”.

During the police interview Mr Miller admitted to taking the drug LSD, days before the killing.

“I felt I had a curse on me and the only way I could fix it was to kill myself or kill her.

“Essentially I lost a part of me,” Mr Miller told police.

The jury was also today played an audio recording of Mr Miller’s first court appearance in Newcastle in which he repeated: “I’m a murderer”, against the advice of his legal representative.

The court heard Mr Miller, a second-year university student and part-time service station worker, had no criminal history or mental health diagnosis before the killing.

The jury has been told that the issue of whether or not Mr Miller killed Ms Wardle was not in question.

The trial centers on whether Mr Miller’s actions were a drug-induced psychotic episode, or related to a spiral into schizophrenia.

The trial continues.
