IH moving COVID vaccine clinics to pharmacies and community clinics

Ih moving covid vaccine clinics to pharmacies and community clinics

Interior Health is moving away from large, mass COVID-19 vaccine clinics to smaller clinics located in health centers and pharmacies over the coming weeks.

Children between the age of five and 11 can get their vaccines at local IH clinics, while those over the age of 12 can do so at one of over 90 participating pharmacies across the health authority.

The two large Kamloops clinics – at the McArthur Island Curling Club and the Tournament Capital Center fieldhouse – were closed in the fall.

Interior Health says this official transition comes as 91 per cent of British Columbians over the age of five have gotten one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with 86 per cent having gotten two doses, and 51 per cent have received three doses.

“During this transition, it’s still important for people to continue to get these vaccines when they are eligible,” IHA interim chief medical health officer, Dr. Sue Pollock, said, in a statement. “This means getting younger age groups their primary series of the vaccine or the booster doses for people age 12 and older to strengthen and maintain their immunity.

“These steps will reduce the spread of the virus in our communities and disruptions to our lives as a result. Most importantly, these vaccines are highly effective against severe disease and hospitalization.”

Pollock says Interior Health will still host regular and pop-up clinics in rural and remote communities where access to pharmacies may be limited.
