“I’m going to study for free”: Hispanic from Texas manages to get $ 1.5 million in scholarship

SAN ANTONIO — Brandon Vazquez Munoz, 17, is about to graduate from Johnson High School and has already planned his future: He’ll study at prestigious Cornell University in New York without paying a dime.

“It’s been a great experience. Honestly, thinking about this year with the schools, you know, my parents were very concerned about the cost of school … But honestly, with all these scholarships Plus I am going to be able to study for free and this is a huge achievement for me and my family.” Vazquez Munoz said.

The student explained that during the semester he applied for at least 13 different scholarships to pay for his university expenses, never did he imagine that the figure would reach millions of dollars.

The total number continues to rise as more responses to their requests come in. The student appreciated the Northeast ISD School District’s Avid program, a college preparatory system that allowed her to meet with other peers to learn about scholarship opportunities to apply for.

His parents, both originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, offered support during the scholarship selection process and he says that many of his achievements are thanks to them.

“My parents are from Mexico, they came here to the United States when they were 17 years old. My mom was able to finish high school, but my dad never finished his studies and I Am the second person to go to college now. My elder brother is in college,” said the student.

Vázquez Muñoz explained that he would study mechanical engineering with the hopes of working for industry majors such as Google or Amazon. He also has goals of building his own company and foundation to help countries like Mexico in the field of technology.

“I want to go to places like Mexico, for example, and help bring that technology to the areas where it’s needed. I have a lot of cousins ​​who are there and they don’t even have a computer at home.” is… I want to use my power to help,” said Vazquez Muñoz.

The young man is now preparing for the great adventure of moving from Texas to New York, although with some apprehension because he will be away from his family for the first time, he is confident that he will achieve his goals because he has their support.
