The Undersecretary of Higher Education, Luciano Conchero Borquez, insisted that the Ministry of Public Education “only registers (professional) titles, we do not award them”, which is why he considered the request of Mexico’s National Autonomous University “impossible”. “(UNAM) so that the federal agency can decide on the validity of the title of Yasmin Esquivel Mousa, Minister of the Supreme Court of the Nation, who faces allegations of plagiarism.
“There has been no official conversation with UNAM, we replied to the letter they sent to us saying that the proposal is in their jurisdiction, especially since it is an autonomous institution (…) I think the university building that way.” That this should not happen again. It is not in our area and it seems that when there is a problem, we can substitute autonomy”, he said.
In an interview, after the conclusion of the extraordinary session of the General Assembly of the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education (ANUISE), he affirmed that the SEP’s position “is not to absolve any responsibility, what we did Went to UNAM which was the way to them, but with great respect because it is our maximum house of study”.
Conchero Borquez stressed that “it is not in fact by throwing things that we are going to move forward. UNAM chose the path of disciplining and terminating the contract of the thesis advisor and this is causing new things to emerge”.
However, he acknowledged that Minister Esquivel’s case is complicated from the legal side, so “I think it should be the actors themselves who must make a way, whatever that may be, let’s say in conscience.”
