IMSS exceeds 2022 target by 16% in organ and tissue transplants

MEXICO CITY.- By completing 2,849 transplants and donating 1,136 organs and tissues, 197 of which were multi-organ, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) exceeded a productivity target for the region in 2022 by 16 percent.

The largest number of transplants and the highest requests were for kidneys:

Of the total number of procedures, 1,284 were for kidney, 1,103 for cornea, 365 for bone marrow (hematopoietic progenitor cells), 71 for liver and 26 for heart.

Dr. Solis emphasized that this goal was achieved thanks to the services provided by COVID-19:

Dr. Pedro Paz Solis, IMSS’s Standards Coordinator for Donation and Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells, pointed out that achieving this objective was possible with the implementation of the plan and effective actions for the recovery of services suspended by COVID-19. Donation and transplant conditions.

I point out that the Mexican population continues to wear tissue due to diabetes and high blood pressure:

Dr. Paz Solis emphasized that the high prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and obesity in the Mexican population are among the main causes of loss of function of organs and tissues, which generates the need to offer cost-effective treatment options such as transplantation .

More than 20 thousand people in the waiting list for transplant:

In addition, he indicated that nationally, the National Transplant Center (CENATRA) list of people waiting for an organ or tissue is 20,228, of whom 15,17 are beneficiaries of social security, thus, the institution performs 54 percent. out of all the transplants done in the country.

“In social security we have the largest infrastructure in the region, highly trained doctors, transplant centers where the highest technology is offered, even compared internationally, being used in developed countries. medicines. However, it is essential that we help the deserving population and the Mexican people by accepting the altruistic donation of their organs or tissues. We must say yes to donation, yes to life,” he asked.
