In its search for young users, Facebook turns to authors and online hangouts.

Meta’s Facebook is trying to lure young users away from the noisy, youth-oriented social networks like TikTok and Snapchat, and starts by creating more places for them to spend time online, offering creators the temptation to share their content.

According to internal Facebook documents reviewed by Bloomberg News, the social network has been losing popularity among young people and teens for years. This competition threatens user growth and the company’s future advertising appeal, and is not something that can be quickly remedied.

When Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke on a P&L teleconference in late October, he said that making the company’s apps attractive to young people – ages 18-29 – was its new Northern Star.

Tom Allison, head of the Facebook app, said the company is looking to improve its young people experience in the two-year horizon, but it’s also an “evergreen” problem because today’s young people will age over time. He said that young people want to spend time together online, live and in real time.

“What we are seeing is a desire, especially among young people, not only to have asynchronous broadcast spaces, but to be able to come together in such smaller, more synchronous spaces,” Alison said in an interview this week.

Facebook’s efforts include encouraging creators to publish original content online in the hopes that their fans will follow from other apps. Earlier this year, the company announced a $ 1 billion fund for creators and plans to focus more on features that bring users together in real time, such as audio and video chats.

Facebook also said Wednesday it will pay some creators a bonus of up to $ 20 per new subscriber by the end of the year, up to $ 10,000 per creator over the course of the program.

The company, which changed its name to Meta last month to reflect its focus on augmented and virtual reality rather than social media, has spent years researching how young people and teens use its services. Research over the past few years has shown that Facebook is no longer as attractive to young people as it used to be, in part because Facebook doesn’t offer them a clear and simple reason to use the service every day.

The meta also pushes further into groups, online places where social media users often meet other people who have common interests or identities.

On Thursday, the company unveiled several new features for groups, including the ability to sell products within a group or create “paid subgroups.” Joining a subgroup will require payment and can be useful for “coaching, networking, or deeper conversations,” Facebook wrote on its blog.

For years, groups have been the focus of Facebook. While smaller, more intimate communities are popular with users – over 1.8 billion people use groups every month – they also lead to misinformation and polarization as people join like-minded groups that are less likely to be flagged.
