In Nantucket, Biden’s shops are visited by the lighting of the Christmas tree.

NANTUKET, Massachusetts (AP) – President Joe Biden appeared on Friday for a celebration in Nantucket.

Biden spent over an hour strolling the cobbled streets of downtown Nantucket, popping into quaint family shops without warning, shopping and posing for photos with surprised business owners.

Several of his grandchildren accompanied him. Biden and his entire family are spending Thanksgiving in Massachusetts, renting a sprawling complex owned by his friend and billionaire philanthropist David Rubinstein.

“Hi Joe,” “We love you Joe,” some people shouted as Biden walked by on a cold and rainy day. One man was heard telling the 79-year-old president that he personally looked younger.

It is these interactions with ordinary people that Biden really likes, who has been fighting back politics for almost five decades, but has not done so because of COVID-19.

Biden went for a walk after speaking with reporters about the new COVID-19 variant that is circulating in South Africa and his decision on Friday for the US to join other countries in limiting travel from southern Africa starting Monday.

The President opened Friday by going to a restaurant for lunch with his wife Jill, children Hunter and Ashley, and their grandchildren. It’s a family tradition after Thanksgiving. They then dropped by the nearest bookstore before Biden went for a walk.

He walked into a leather goods store and several clothing, gift and home improvement stores before the family reunited to take part in another tradition: attending the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Nantucket.

Biden’s walk through the city center was reminiscent of Barack Obama’s presidency, when he rebelled against the restrictions associated with the Oval Office. Modern presidents don’t usually walk.

“The bear is free!” Obama stated one day in 2014 when he walked out of the White House instead of in a motorcade and headed for the Home Office, hitting ordinary people on the streets of downtown Washington.

Biden did not make such a statement.
