New Delhi Aam Aadmi Party state president and MP Bhagwant Mann raised the issue of illegal mining going on in Punjab in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Raising the issue in Parliament, Mann said that there are two Sutlej and Beas rivers in Punjab and many rainy rivers also flow, but the state’s natural resources are being looted for many years.
A sand mine is allowed to extract sand from rivers but with it 40-50 mines are illegally extracting sand. These mining mafia are digging deep pits up to 100 feet in the rivers, disregarding the directives of the NGT. Sand is being extracted by digging to the bottom near the bridges built over the rivers, due to which the danger of sinking the bridge is always hovering.
He said that when there was a SAD-BJP government in Punjab, his ministers and MLAs ran the business of sand mafia. Now the business of sand mafias is going on under the protection of the Congress government. You will always find tractor and trucks filled with mining mafia’s sand in the Crusher, Sutlej and Beas rivers in Pathankot district. Today, legal sand is getting less, illegal sand is getting more in Punjab.
Due to the sand mafia, it has become difficult for the common man to build houses in Punjab today. If these mafias are not controlled then these people will swallow the resources of Punjab. He appealed to the House to protect the natural resources of Punjab from plunder and to take action against the sand-mafia.
