Indian wrestlers disappointed at the World Championships, with 5 out of 6 wrestlers eliminated

BELGRADE: The performance of Indian male freestyle wrestlers at the World Championships was disappointing. Of the six wrestlers who fought for the Olympic quota, five dropped out of this major tournament and only Abhimanyu could reach the medal round in the non-Olympic 70kg weight category. What was even more disappointing was that Indian wrestlers suffered defeats against opponents from countries that were not known for their good wrestling skills. For this reason, there are doubts about the fitness of the players arriving in Belgrade. Sachin Mor (79kg) had to admit defeat to North Macedonia’s Ahmed Magomedov due to his technical ability, while Anuj Kumar (65kg) couldn’t even clear the qualifying round hurdle.

Anuj had to admit defeat against the Mexican Clea Gomez 7:8. Indian wrestlers were unlikely to lose to wrestlers from Mexico and North Macedonia. It is learned that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had suggested to the Sports Ministry to get the selected wrestlers medically examined before sending them to participate.

WFI said many of them were likely injured. WFI general secretary VN Prasood wrote in a letter to the sports minister on September 11: “Some of the selected wrestlers are injured, especially the 65 kg freestyle wrestler.” I suggest that a medical examination should be carried out before leaving India, so that players can be replaced in a timely manner.

India’s biggest medal hope Aman Sehrawat (57 kg) had to admit defeat to reigning world champion Zalimkhan Abakarov from Albania in the quarter-finals. Abhimanyu had to admit defeat to Armen Andressyan of Armenia in the bronze medal match in the 70kg category due to his technical skills.

Akash Dahiya (61 kg), Naveen (74 kg), Sachin Mor (79 kg), Sandeep Singh Mann (86 kg), Prithvi Raj (92 kg) and Sumit (125 kg) were eliminated after losses in different rounds of the tournament. Sahil is challenging in the 97kg category, the Olympic weight class.
