Verma’s iconic films include “Shiva” (1989), “Satya” (1998), and “Sarkar” (2005).
Produced by Varma, “Dhannam” is directed by Agastya Manju (“Coronavirus”). The cast includes Isha Koppikar, Abhishek Duhan, Naina Ganguly, Ashwatkant Sharma, Parvati Arun, Sayaji Shinde, Abhilash Choudhary and Pradeep Rawat.
Originally made in Telugu language, the seven-episode series has also been dubbed in Hindi and Tamil.
Set in rural India, the series is based on the murder of Mr. Ramulu, a communist activist. His son, Hari, is a rebel active from the jungle in guerrilla warfare with the landlords and is furious at the news of his father’s death. He takes it upon himself to hunt down the culprit for his father’s murder, leading to a war between the most powerful men in the village.
Verma said, “Thrilled to announce my first web series ‘Dhanam’ in association with MX Player. The story moves in a gray area between two contradictory quotes ‘An eye for an eye only will succeed in making’.
The whole world is blind,’ said Mahatma Gandhi, and ‘revenge is the purest emotion,’ as quoted in the Mahabharata. ‘Dhanam’ is not just a story of revenge, but a story of a cycle of revenge.
“It is not a crime thriller, but it is about thrilling crimes, which are designed to create adrenaline pumping excitement,” says Verma. “With this show, we haven’t gone an extra mile, but have gone several miles with the intense method actors living their roles in to do justice to the violent demands of the story.”
“Dhanam” is streaming from April 14.
