Influenced by the faceplay trend on Instagram? Here is all the data you are giving

  • There is a new trending face swapping app called “Faceplay”.
  • This app lets you change your face to repeat videos of different subjects.
  • FacePlay has over 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store.

There is always a face swapping app that goes viral every now and then on social media. One of the most recent and popular ones was Reface which lets you replace your face with a celebrity. Now a new app is trending and its videos are taking over the Instagram reels. It’s called “Faceplay” and has over 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store.

What it does is swap your face to replicate videos of different subjects, such as different nationalities, dress and scenes from the movie. Videos in Faceplay are short which makes them play easily on Instagram reels with short video concept. The app can be downloaded on Android and iOS but to get access to all of its features and without ads, you need to have a subscription. It costs ₹129 per week and ₹1,599 per year. You can use it for free but to make a video you have to watch an ad.

If you have seen faceplay video on the reels or anywhere else you must have noticed how accurately it captures someone’s face. It analyzes your facial features through your selfies or photos from your phone’s gallery to create “face fusion” for the final video. FacePlay says that it does not store any face data and the data is deleted after the analysis process.

Once it’s analyzed your photo, it’ll replace you with the one in the video, which looks a lot like you. You can save the video to your phone or share it with other apps directly from FacePlay.

Data Faceplay collects

Face swapping apps often face backlash for the data they collect as the apps need your facial data to create deepfakes. The official website and app of FacePlay has a Privacy Policy section where it details what information it collects, permissions required, how it collects, shares and protects the information.

When it comes to facial data, it is clearly written that no data is collected and removed after analyzing the photo. FacePlay requires you to login to use the app, and you can only do so through a third-party service such as Facebook, Google, or Apple. Details such as your email address, account name, phone number and region are collected through the third-party service you login with.

FacePlay also collects device information such as device model, IMEI number, login IP address, software version number, language set on the phone, and network quality. However you will need to share permissions on your phone like camera, read and write, notifications and network status. You can also check in app settings on Android and iOS what permissions the app currently has, and turn them off if necessary.
