After a consolation victory over Great Britain in their opener of the 2023 World Baseball Classic on Saturday, the US faces a tougher challenge on Sunday. His second game will be against a team from Mexico that has experienced many great talents such as Randy Arozarena, Alex Verdugo, Rowdy Tellez and Luis UrÃas. Although the United States, with a largely star-studded line-up, will start as favorites in Group C, Mexico figures to be their tougher opponents.
Mexico lost to Colombia on Saturday 5-4 after overtime. In the morning, pitcher Julio Urias struck out the first 12 at-bats before hitting a home run that sparked the Columbus offense.
The United States defeated Great Britain 6-2 in the game. Initially, they allowed a solo home run on the first pitch when Trayce Thompson hit Adam Wainwright’s first pitch into left field, giving the British a 1-0 lead. But the Americans met in the middle.
Mexico is 2-1 against the United States in its history in the World Baseball Classic. Memorably the best game these two teams ever played was in 2006. In that game, they fielded a United States team that included Roger Clemens on the mound and Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr. and Chipper Jones on the line. But the Mexicans held on when Oliver Pérez pitched three scoreless innings. Also, Jorge Cantú scored twice against Clement to give Mexico the momentum it needed in the final 2-1 victory.
The game begins at 7 p.m. at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
Sandoval will join Benji Gil (both are members of the Angels organization) to also make his WBC debut in 2023 for Mexico. A native of Mission Viejo, California, Sandoval’s father is originally from Mexico City.
