BAGHDAD ( Associated Press) – At least four rockets targeted the US embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Thursday, two Iraqi security officials said. The area is home to diplomatic missions and the seat of the government of Iraq.
Officials said three missiles hit the perimeter of the US embassy. Another hit a school located in a nearby residential complex. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
An Iraqi military statement said a girl and a woman were wounded in the attack, without giving further details. The statement said the rockets were fired from the Dora area of Baghdad.
The US embassy in Baghdad said in a statement that its compound was attacked by “terrorist groups attempting to undermine Iraq’s security, sovereignty and international relations.” The embassy’s C-RAM defense system – supposed to detect and destroy incoming rockets, artillery and mortar shells – was heard during the attack.
The attack is the latest in a series of rocket and drone strikes that have targeted a US presence in Iraq since the beginning of the year, the second anniversary of the US attack that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al. -Muhandis.
Last Thursday, there were several attacks targeting US troops in Iraq and Syria. Rockets hit an Iraqi military base hosting US troops in western Anbar province and the capital.
Pro-Iranian Shia groups in Iraq have vowed to avenge Soleimani’s killing and have put the condition of ending the attacks if US troops are completely pulled out of the country.
The US-led coalition last month formally ended its combat mission supporting Iraqi forces in the ongoing fight against the Islamic State group. Some 2,500 soldiers will remain as the coalition shifts to an advisory mission to continue supporting Iraqi forces.
The top US commander for the Middle East, Marine General Frank McKenzie, warned in an interview with The Associated Press last month that he expected increased attacks on American and Iraqi personnel by Iranian-backed militias, who were trying to pull out US forces. are determined to
