Spain, will you be able to take small flat trips like France?
France has banned regional flights since each train is less than two and a half hours long. The world-leading measure, which happened to come into effect this week, affects flights between Nantes, Bordeaux, Lyon and Paris-Orly. Could this initiative be seen in Spain?
In Spain, the idea of banning commercial flights for short national routes, which has been brought up by train, may be fruitless.
Eliminate flights to reduce CO2″
The project was launched within the “Plan Spain” 2050 by Pedro Sánchez, presented two years ago. France, a measure included in the French Climate Law approved in August 2021, seeks to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions from aviation.
The Spanish executive council “recommends banning the flight on these routes that can be done by train in less than 2.5 hours”. The government of Pedro Sánchez calculates that this measure will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two million tons.
The plan “Spain 2050: Foundations and propositions of the National Long-Term Strategy” also proposes to tax the air traveler more, creating a tax “of tickets clearly according to the proximity of the destination”.
Criticism of the enterprise in Spain
The measure was not well received by the Airlines Association (ALA), which explained that by eliminating flights of less than 500 kilometers or two hours, they achieve only a “marginal reduction” in greenhouse gases, as only the routes from Madrid to Alicante, Barcelona; Valencia, Malaga and Spain are in these parameters and represent less than 1% of CO2 emissions.
In addition, the idea of placing a tax on passenger tickets would discourage travelers and have a “devastating” impact on the aeronautics and tourism sector, “the first instrument of growth for the country, and therefore for the economy and employment”.
Delegated to the Ministry of Ecological Transition in 2021, the same year that the ‘Council of Spain 2000’ was offered, the report to INECO, public engineering and consultation of the Ministry of Transport in the field of mobility and digitization, banned. short flight
But the matter was not heard of again. With the exception of amendments to ban flights every time there is a train of less than four hours by Unidas Podemos, Más País, Esquerra and EH Bildu in the parliamentary process of the Mobility bill last March. A rule that should be in force at the end of the year.
Keys to the French ban
For three years, France has banned commercial flights between cities that have a train connection of two and a half hours or less.
The French decree states that train journeys need to have “sufficient frequencies and adequate schedules”, allowing passengers to stay at the destination for more than eight hours a day.
