Israeli forces kill two Palestinians in West Bank

RAMALLAH, West Bank ( Associated Press) — Israeli forces killed two Palestinians, including a suspected member of an armed group, during clashes early Monday as forces entered a West Bank Palestinian village, Palestinian officials said.

Two people died in the village of Kafr Dan, near the northern city of Jenin. The Israeli army said it entered Kafr Dan late on Sunday to demolish the homes of two Palestinians who killed an Israeli soldier during a firefight in September. The army said that there was heavy firing on the troops and the attackers were retaliated.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been running high for months. On Monday, the Israeli rights group B’Tselem claimed that 2022 was the deadliest year for Palestinians since 2004.

The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the dead as Samir Hushiyeh, 21, and Fouad Abed, 25, according to Samir Attiyah, director of Jenin’s Ibn Sina Hospital. Hoseyah was shot several times in the chest.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades said that Husheyeh was related to the group. The armed group subsidiary of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party published an old photo in which Hoshiyeh posed with rifles. A video circulated on social networks showed his body draped in the armed group’s flag while his mother and other mourners bid him goodbye.

It was not immediately clear whether the second Palestinian killed was also linked to a terrorist group.

Israel regularly demolishes the homes of terrorists to deter attackers. Critics claim that this tactic is akin to collective punishment.
